by California.com Team
Established on September 8, 1771, by Spanish priests of the Franciscan order, San Gabriel Mission was the fourth mission in a chain stretching from San Diego to Sonoma. Led by Father Junípero Serra, the aim was to convert the native populations to Christianity and solidify Spanish claims over the territory. Originally located along the Rio de los Temblores (today’s Whittier Narrows), the mission faced water shortages and flooding, which led to its relocation in 1776 to its present site in San Gabriel.

6. 41-year-old Bay Area deli Domenico's makes hard-to-find subs
by SF Gate Food Team
The Bay Area native was all of 9 years old when she started helping out at her parents’ first Alameda deli, P&G Italian Deli. Now, at 66, she’s carrying on the legacy of their second business, Domenico’s Italian Delicatessen, which has been a fixture in the community since 1982. It’s the kind of place where customers are considered friends and you can still get a nourishing lunch for under $10.
