I was positive that the oldest Italian restaurant in America would be in either New York, Boston, or New Haven. To my surprise and maybe yours that isn’t the truth. Here is the story from Atlas Obscura about the oldest Italian restaurant that closed in 2012, it then reopened a few months later.
1. Fior D’ Italia
by Atlas Obscura Staff
FIOR D’ ITALIA CLOSED ITS doors in May 2012 to sad howls from the San Francisco culinary community. The restaurant was already venerable by then: For 126 years, it had served plates of pasta and veal to presidents and Pavarotti. It wasn’t a bad run for a place that got its start at a brothel in 1886.
Staying on the topic of food I thought I had seen everything in the food business until I read the article below. I know there have been cases where food gets intermingled with fashion, but this is the topper for me.
2. Skechers Opened a Restaurant Inside One of Its Stores
by Jelisa Castrodale
That very obvious Costco homage had a limited menu of reasonably priced faves, including $2.50 Nathan’s hot dogs, $2.50 slices of cheese pizza, and a $5 double cheeseburger. But the most surprising part of the whole situation is that the restaurant, called The Food Spot, is attached to a Skechers store in Gardena, California. “I have no idea why they went bizarro Costco with it, but it’s pretty popular,” the Redditor wrote, adding that the Food Spot’s fries were “pretty great.”
3. This Secret Bar In California’s Redwood Forest Can Only Be Reached By Train
by Luka Trcek
The Glen Blair Bar opened in 2022 in the middle of a redwood forest in Mendocino County, Northern California. It can only be reached by train, which travels through a spectacular landscape and offers a unique and magical experience.
The historic Skunk Train is now available to patrons of the Glen Blair Bar, a venue traditionally used only for special events. This vintage train, which has been running since 1885, takes passengers from the Skunk Train depot in Fort Bragg, California, directly to the outdoor bar.
4. San Francisco's Walt Disney Family Museum isn't just for kids
by Kristen Carr, SF Gate
Are you ready to venture beyond the gates of Disneyland and dive into the spirit of Walt Disney's innovation? Want a Disney experience without going all the way to Anaheim? The Walt Disney Family Museum, nestled in the heart of San Francisco's Presidio, is a hidden gem that offers a captivating journey through the extraordinary life of Walt Disney, a visionary whose creativity and legacy continue to enchant audiences of all ages.
Doesn't everyone like a deal when it comes to dining out? I mean when you can spend over $30.00 on a McDonald’s meal for the family, depending on the number, something has to give. This may be the place to go!
5. ‘Fine dining without the BS’: Affordable San Francisco restaurant goes viral
by Madeline Wells, SF Gate
A few months ago, Pink Onion went viral on social media for a dinner combo deal that seemed too good to be true: an appetizer, pasta, pizza and dessert that feeds 2 to 3 people, all for $55. And on Wednesdays, they throw in a free bottle of wine, too.
